Dr.David Hirsch

Education and Continuing Education

Dr. Hirsch graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) in Physiology in 1988. While studying sciences, he developed an interest in art history, covering Masters of the Renaissance period to present-day Abstractionists.

Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Hirsch completed his dental training at McGill University, obtaining his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS) in 1993. While in his in final year in dentistry at McGill, Dr. Hirsch served as President of the Graduating Class as well as the President of the Dental Fraternity, also acting as the student member of the Curriculum Committee.

Achievements while in dental school:

  • Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity Undergraduate Scholarship (1993)
  • Dean’s Commendation for Leadership from the Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University (1993)
  • First Prize at the regional Table Clinics Competition from the Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University, for a presentation on An Evaluation of the Long-term Effectiveness of TMJ Arthroscopy; invited to present at the Quebec Dental Convention (1993)
  • Montreal Dental Club Prize for the best presentation made by fourth-year students at the McGill Table Clinics Competition (1993)
  • Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity Chapter Efficiency Prize, at the 1992 Alpha Omega International Dental Convention, for being one of the “best and most efficient” Student Chapters (1992).

Following dental school, Dr. Hirsch practiced as a general dentist for one year in Montreal and spent time flying to Northern Quebec where he was employed by the Cree Board of Health in Mistassini, Quebec. After this year of private general practice, Dr. Hirsch went on to complete his orthodontic training at the University of Detroit Mercy, where he received a Certificate in Orthodontics (Cert. Ortho) as well as a Master of Science (M.S.) degree. Dr. Hirsch went onto publish his Thesis, “Assessment of Pretreatment Orthodontic Patients Using the BANA Test” in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

As part of his commitment to the specialty of orthodontics, Dr. Hirsch passed all the examinations leading to the award of “Fellow” by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (FRCD(C)), and then later became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (Dip. ABO).

From 1996 to 2012, Dr. Hirsch was a clinical orthodontic instructor and lecturer (Associate in Dentistry) in the undergraduate department at the University of Toronto. He was responsible for the training of the undergraduate dental students with a particular focus on the development of the dentition and occlusion, edgewise appliances, and the treatment of impacted teeth. He has lectured and given a number of continuing education courses to practicing dentists, dental hygienists, and various regional societies. Dr. Hirsch was also an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

Professional Memberships

Presently, Dr. Hirsch is an active member of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, Ontario Association of Orthodontists, and American Association of Orthodontists, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Canada, Alpha Omega, and the Invisalign® Study Club. Dr. Hirsch actively participates in hundreds of hours of continuing education courses in orthodontics and dentistry. Dr. Hirsch was also an editor for the North Toronto Dental Society Newsletter.

Outside the Office

While growing up in Montreal, Dr. Hirsch developed a passion for running which continues to this very day. He has become an accomplished runner, having completed eight marathons, including the New York Marathon. Sports has always been an integral component of Dr. Hirsch’s leisure time, having reached the Brown Advanced level in Shotokan Karate.

It was during his orthodontic residency, that Dr. Hirsch developed a keen interest in nature and photography. This combined passion resulted in his photographs being published both locally and internationally. Indeed, Life Magazine expressed an interest in publishing one of his photo essays.

Another of Dr. Hirsch’s passions has been the Motion Picture Industry. Through the years, he has become a respected expert in the area of Screen Used Movie Props, with a special focus on Star Trek, Star Wars, and Marvel. It is as a result of these interests, that Dr. Hirsch has elected to build movie-themed offices.

In addition, Dr. Hirsch enjoys giving back to the community. For the last nine years, he has been involved with the Santa Claus Parade as a Celebrity Clown.
