Getting braces? Excited? Confused? Scared? All are OK. The journey of braces is a long and grueling one, but one that would give you immense satisfaction in the end. However, before starting that journey, you need to know a few things. How do braces work? How long they will take? What type of braces should I get? How much does it cost? Among other questions you need to find the answer to. But perhaps the most important question is “who is the best provider of braces near me?”. As we’ll answer shortly, the choice of the orthodontist and his location may be the deciding factor on how your treatment goes.
How do braces work?
There are 2 types of braces:
-
Fixed braces (including metal, clear and lingual braces):
These are fixed to the teeth surface, and crossed by a wire. The wire is held to the brackets through a number of elastics, and the whole system pulls the teeth to the desired location.
-
Removable braces (AKA Invisalign):
Invisalign depends on plastic, transparent molds called aligners. You wear them on the outer surface of the teeth, and they apply pressure to move the teeth.
Which type is best?
It really depends on what you need out of your treatment. All options will lead to the same outcome, but the journey is quite different. Traditional metallic braces are fast and reliable, but they carry a number of disadvantages. They look ugly, always cut and scrape against the soft tissue, and they take a long time to show effect. The other types of fixed braces (clear and lingual braces) took care of the appearance problem, but are still uncomfortable and require a lengthy treatment period.
Invisalign – on the other hand – is quite the opposite. It looks great (practically invisible), is very comfortable, incredibly accurate, and quite faster than fixed braces. Its only downside is that it costs a bit more than braces.
