Braces are in great demand nowadays. More and more people are seeking that perfect smile, and braces is one of the most requested ways to give you just that. Braces (also known as orthodontics) is the art and science of aligning teeth. If you suffer from crooked teeth, spaced teeth, or any other problem related to how your teeth are arranged inside your mouth, then braces is the answer for you.

Perhaps the most common question when it comes to braces is “when is the right time to get braces?”. In the old days, braces were almost exclusive to children. Kids are more resilient and have a malleable bone structure, so braces could move their teeth easily. Nowadays, however, the situation is different. With the evolution of technology and new techniques developed over the past decade, braces are now available for everyone.

What is the perfect age for starting braces?

There is no single answer to that question. Every case is different and every case has its own perfect treatment plan. In general, if you notice a problem with your child’s teeth alignment beyond the age of 9 to 10 years, then you should seek the consultation of an orthodontist. Most cases begin by the age of 11 to 12 years. During that time, all the baby teeth would have fallen out and adult teeth would have come in (save for the wisdom teeth of course). This is the right time to start moving the teeth around. In addition, the bones are still soft and could adapt easily to the new teeth positions.

So braces for teens are better than adults?

Not necessarily better, but is definitely easier and faster. Each case has its own unique aspects. And their own perfect treatment plan. That being said, braces for teens is significantly easier since their bones are not set, and their growth spurt has not yet occurred. Taking advantage of the growth spurt is one of the key components of orthodontic treatment. In simpler terms, if you have identical cases of teeth mal-alignment in both a teen and an adult, then the teen would finish hi\her treatment a lot faster than the adult.

What are the options available for my teenage son\daughter?

There are generally 4 types of braces:

  1. Traditional metallic braces: The good ole fashioned metallic brackets wires and colorful elastics.
  2. Clear braces: Which is the same as metallic braces but the brackets are made of a clear ceramic material instead of metal.
  3. Lingual braces: A modern concept where braces are placed on the inside of the teeth rather than the outside. Usually not suitable for teens and children.
  4. Invisalign (or in this case Invisalign Teen): The most advanced technology in orthodontics. No brackets or wires. Just a transparent mold that fits the outer surface of the teeth.

If your child has already exchanged all his baby teeth for permanent ones, then the choice is entirely up to you and him\her. Each type has its merits and flaws, so consult your orthodontist to find out what’s best for you and them. If you like to know more, Dr. Hirsch and the team are read to answer your questions.
